Next Sunday the 17th September, I'll be reunited with wonderful Syrian kanun virtuoso Maya Youssef for the Ham and High Lit Fest @ JW3, London >> MORE INFO + TIX
Here's a traditional Sephardi song, 'La Galana I La Mar' about a bride and the sea, which Maya and I will be playing together. Maya is directly from Damascus and my family is originally from Aleppo (there for centuries, though they left late 19th/early 20th c). So she's picked out an Aleppine song in Arabic, 'Mowashah' for me which I'm hard at work learning and it's amazing how much it sounds like the Bakkashot singing that is sung at synagogues in the Syrian tradition. Music has no borders! <3 Hope to see you there! #HHLitFest
The night also features writers Bidisha (compere), Kayo Chingonyi, Stella Duffy, Sophie Herxheimer, Sabrina Mahfouz, Amaal Said, Karen McCarthy Woolf and Nadifa Mohamed.
